Glossary of E-Marketing Terms

Domain Name System
The manner in which Internet addresses are organised for easy identification. According to our text book the domain name is "The address identifying a specific site on the Internet."
The Domain Name for my blog is HOST41032007, followed by the domain in which it resides blogspot.com - the extension com indicates that the page is a commercial entity.

URLs are comprised of domain names: http://www.georgebrown.ca followed by the extension, in this case - .ca which identifies that this domain name is Canadian.

Domain Name:
Textbook definition: The address identifying a specfic site on the Internet. Domain names are derived from a heirarchical system with a host name followed by a top-level domain category.

E-mail (Electronic Mail)
Textbook definition: A system of electronic transmission of digital messages over the Internet.

E-mail address:
An email address is comprised of name of the person or entity to whom the e-mail is addressed followed by the @ sign, followed by the domain name.

E-commerce
The textbook definition: A system of conducting business activities using the Internet and other information technologies. Refers to using computer networks to conduct business, including buygin and selling online., electronic funds transfer, business communications, and other activities associated with the buying adn selling of goods and services online.

Stream Video (from the textbook)
A means of sending compressed moving images one-way over the Internet, at the user's request, that allows viewing in real time as it downloads over the Internet. Unlike video that is downloaded for subsequent playback, streaming video is stored in temporary files and deleted when the application used to view it is closed.

Streaming Media (textbook definition)
A technique for transferring data such that it can be processed at a steady and continuous stream.

World Wide Web (www) [Textbook definition]
Also referred to as the Web. A collection of globally distributed text and multimedia documents, files, and other network services linked via the Internet and with hypertext technology creating an immense library from which information can be retrieved quickly by intuitive searches.

Wireless Internet/Web
Refers to a computer network scheme where there is no physical connection between sender and receiver but are instead connected by radio.

Station Banner Ad
A banner that stays on the same spot on the screen and never moves.

Third Party Travel Web sites
Web sites owned by travel e-commerce businesses that offer similar services as athe traditional agents, but typically without a physical storefront.

Viral Marketing
Refers to a process in which consumers voluntarily spread a message about a company, a product, or a service based on their own experience. It is the Internet version of word-of-mouth marketing.

META Tag
An HTML tag that contains information about a Web page. It is a description of the Web page, key words, and the page's title.

Moving Banner Ad
A banner ad that moves around the screen to try to stay visible to the eyes of the online visitor as the visitor looks at the different part of a Web page on the screen.
